How to keep training when you travel

Trips break routines because the plan assumed your gym. The fix is a plan that changes with where you are, not one you abandon.

Match the session to the place

Where you areWhat to do
Hotel roomThe 20-minute hotel room workout: bodyweight, quiet, two square metres
Hotel gymDumbbells and a bench cover almost any plan. Keep your usual session, swap barbell moves for dumbbell versions
ParkA bench gives you step-ups, incline push-ups and dips. Add a 10-minute run
Airport or long travel dayWalk the terminal for 20 minutes and do a few hip flexor stretches. It counts

A three-day travel week

Train on day one, day three and day five of the trip. Keep sessions at 20 minutes so they never compete with the reason you are there. Walk on the days in between; most travel days already give you 10,000 steps if you let them.

Jet lag and food

Train in daylight on your first morning: it helps reset your body clock. For meals, aim for protein at every one and do not try to be perfect. Logging what you ate, even roughly, keeps you honest without making dinner awkward.

Questions

Should I work out when jet lagged?

A short, easy session in daylight helps most people adjust faster. Save hard efforts for day two or three.

How do I track food while traveling?

Snap a photo of each meal and log an estimate. Rough tracking on a trip beats none, and you can correct numbers later.

Tell it where you are.
